Wisley Supreme witch hazel is light yellow, fragrant, pollinator friendly, winter blooming. I have it situated in front of a dark evergreen so that it stands out in the landscape. The bench is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the fragrance. Listen to the loud birds in the video. There was a northern mockingbird sitting above me as I was speaking and sparrows chirping.

Witch Hazel or Hamamelis - winter-blooming, fragra

Witch Hazel or Hamamelis - winter-blooming, fragrant, colorful shrub. This was labeled as the hybrid called ‘Rochester’ but it is not the same as our other one of the same name. It is 8-10 feet tall and vase shaped, nearly as wide. Site it near a path or log bench so that you can smell its citrusy, slightly fruity, and a bit spicy fragrance. This has rich orange flowers made of rolled up tepals that look like petals. I have 45 witch hazels and crave more. The first blooms in the autumn and last comes out with the daffodils. Witch hazels look great when underplanted with spring bulbs.

GO BIRDS!!! 🦅 🦅🦅
I had to distract my self from thinking about the superbowl
1. Cutting little sprigs of fragrant witch hazel and arranging them in this wonderful bobbly blue glass vase
2. 3. and 4. Making Welsh cakes from this lovely recipe book from 1972 by Sian Llewelyn. I made them with gluten free plain flour and they were delicious. I used cranberries and raisins since I didn’t have currants.
5. 2 new wren and chicken houses. I repainted and added some green vines.

The snowdrop saw its shadow! 6 more weeks of winter! Snowdrops were called Candlemas bells. Candlemas Day - February 2nd - known as ground hog day in USA. 40 days since Christmas.

Listen up bulb lovers and garden designers. The orientation of raised beds affects when plants - especially early spring bulbs - will bloom. This redbud allee is lined up east to west. The sun melts the snow first on the sun- facing bank to the right Bulbs bloom here first. About a week later the bulbs on the cooler bank on the left will then bloom. This is called using mini microclimates around your house and garden. This - and much much more - you will learn in my new bulb book for Timber Press that will be published September 2025.

Lights galore at Brookgreen Gardens - Nights of a Thousand Candles. Magical fun for all ages. Book early for tickets next holiday season. The Live Oak Allee was the most fun with long strands of lights hanging from the trees like curtains. We met the designer of the light display who had personally designed the light curtain shown in the video. The floating candles are lit by hand. As the darkness falls the light show pops to life. Reflections in fountains, a cranberry filled pond, sliver of a moon, and South Carolina palm trees add to the ambiance
