Happy Autumn equinox. As the last day of summer draws to a close in the northern hemisphere the sunny colors of sunflowers, rudbeckias, and orange cosmos echo the sunset colors. Happy autumn from my garden to yours.

What do think flowering tobacco smells like? Smell it in the evening when the fragrance is strongest. It is pollinated by insects like moths that fly at dusk and beyond. Let me know in the comments below. Also bear in mind that some flowering tobacco species and cultivars do not have a perfume. If yours are not deliciously fragrant - next year choose ones with ‘perfume’ in their name. And grow them from their teeny-tiny seeds in late winter. They take a while to get to flowering size but it is definitely worth the wait.

Early morning photo shoot at Frederik Meijer gardens and Sculpture Park near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Add it to your visiting wish list. Over 150 acres of horticultural displays and world-class sculptures. This is a curated taste of what you will see. This morning I was enjoying the monumental sculptures against the backdrop of the rising sun after a rain. The air smelled fresh and earthy, the birds were singing, and the trees rustling. So much has improved since my last visit over a decade ago.

The Sunken Gardens in Lincoln, Nebraska. A small but mighty garden that is packed full of colorful annuals and people enjoying themselves. The way that the garden was constructed in the 1930’s produces a wonderful enclosed space even though the road is nearby. The waterfall and pond add to the calm, secluded feeling.

Northern Plains Botanical Garden - packed with fun, flowers, and whimsy. So many pollinators- butterflies, dragonflies, and hummingbirds. Great fun for children and adults including a fairy garden, annual flower display by first letter of the alphabet, tunnel and balancing logs, a hobbit house, and an extensive edible forest. Minnesota Landscape Arboretum near Minneapolis holds a wealth of gardening delights. I loved the Annual Garden with hummingbirds and the dahlia trial garden. Plenty to see including extensive tree and shrub collections. I will be back!

This September visit has many blooms and tropical plants in full growth. Lots of lovely water features add to the gentle sounds.
